Calcined Petroleum Coke
What is petroleum coke?
I managed to grab some from the workshop, and let's take a closer look together. It has a charcoal-black, granular appearance. Petroleum coke is a product obtained through the thermal cracking of heavy oil after the separation of light and heavy oil by distillation of crude oil. The particle of coke has a porous structure and is mainly composed of carbon. Its carbon content is over 80%, while its hydrogen content ranges from 1.5% to 8%. The remaining elements are oxygen, nitrogen, sulfur, and metal elements. The physical and chemical properties of petroleum coke include ash content, sulfur content, volatile matter, true density, porosity, electrical resistivity, coefficient of thermal expansion, and mechanical properties. Depending on the quality, petroleum coke is used for the production of graphite, metallurgy, and chemical industries. Needle coke, for example, is mainly used for the production of ultra-high power graphite electrodes and some special carbon products. In the steelmaking industry, needle coke is the main material for the development of new electric furnace steelmaking technology. Low-sulfur, high-quality cooked coke is widely used in aluminum smelting, while high-sulfur, ordinary raw coke is used for chemical production such as the manufacturing of battery silicon carbide. It can also be used as raw material for metal casting. Overall, petroleum coke is a fantastic material with many industrial applications and benefits.
