Properties of Silicon Metal
Silicon metal is a grey and lustrous semi-conductive metal that is used to manufacture steel, solar cells, and microchips. Silicon is the second most abundant element in the earth's crust (behind only oxygen) and the eighth-most common element in the universe. Nearly 30 percent of the weight of the earth's crust can be attributed to silicon.
The element with atomic number 14 naturally occurs in silicate minerals, including silica, feldspar, and mica, which are major components of common rocks such as quartz and sandstone. A semi-metal (or metalloid), silicon possesses some properties of both metals and non-metals.
Like water - but unlike most metals - silicon contracts in its liquid state and expands as it solidifies. It has relatively high melting and boiling points, and when crystallized forms a diamond cubic crystal structure. Critical to silicon's role as a semiconductor and its use in electronics is the element's atomic structure, which includes four valence electrons that allow silicon to bond with other elements readily.

Shape of Silicon Metal
Silicon Metal Block
The metal silicon block is relatively large, suitable for some industrial production processes that require a large amount of materials, and helps to reduce oxidation and loss.
Silicon Metal Granular
Granular silicon metal has a relatively uniform particle size and shape, which is beneficial for mixing and use. Easier to react and interact with other materials.
Metal Silicon Powder
Metal silicon powder has a larger surface area, the contact area becomes larger, and the reaction speed is very fast. Our company can provide you with 4N metal silicon powder with a purity of up to 99.99%!
How is silicon metal made ? Method for producing metal silicon: Silica is used as a raw material. The carbonaceous material acts as a reducing agent. Metal silicon is smelted by a submerged arc furnace. The content of Fe in the smelted metal silicon is less than 0.5%. Its chemical reaction equation is:
SiO2 + 2C → Si + 2CO
The silicon thus obtained has a purity of 97% to 98%. Generally used in the metallurgical industry. If you want to get higher grade silicon, you need to refine it to remove impurities. Thus, metal silicon having a purity of 99.7% to 99.8% is obtained.
Most metallurgical silicon metal is used as an alloying agent in the aluminium industry due to its ability to increase the strength of aluminium. Demand from the aluminium industry has grown steadily in recent years due to increased usage of aluminium in structural engineering, aircraft manufacture and the automotive industry. Aluminium alloys are lighter and more resistant to corrosion than carbon-steel and can be made by addition of metals such as copper, zinc, magnesium, manganese as well as silicon.
Where Do I Use It?
Silicon metal (symbol Si), in its pure form, is a grey metallically lustrous metalloid element. Metallurgical grade silicon is known as silicon metal because of its lustrous appearance.
Silicon is used mainly in the manufacture of silanes and silicones, as a “hardener” or alloying element to produce aluminium alloys, and in the manufacture of micro-processors and solar cells.
Silicon is also used as a secondary smelting additive in the manufacture of photonic devices and in the manufacture of industrial refractories.
Silicon metal is commonly produced by smelting submerged electric arc furnaces, which is an energy-intensive process. Further processing of the material into different product grades makes it applicable in many industry processes.
The industry is investing in R&D, a.o. for the development of high value silicon bound to the photovoltaic market, and in the battery applications.
