How to Select Quality Ferrosilicon
1. Accurate Silicon Content
The core value of ferrosilicon lies in its silicon content, which must strictly match the required specifications.
For example, Grade 75 ferrosilicon requires a silicon content of 72%–80%.
High-quality products should maintain a deviation of no more than ±0.5%, which can be verified through third-party testing reports.
2. Appearance and Texture
Premium ferrosilicon appears as gray-black metallic blocks with smooth fracture surfaces and metallic luster, without noticeable honeycomb-like pores.
Excessive pores indicate insufficient deoxidation during smelting.
If the surface shows white powder, it may result from moisture absorption and oxidation due to improper storage, and such products should be selected with caution.
3. Uniform Particle Size
Choose the appropriate particle size based on application:
- 50–100 mm blocks are commonly used in steelmaking.
- 10–50 mm crushed granules are suitable for foundry applications.
High-quality ferrosilicon features uniform granularity with minimal fine powder.
Excessive powder not only causes material loss but may also contain impurities.
On-site sampling and sieving can be performed to verify whether the particle size distribution meets the agreed standards.
4. Raw Materials and Production Control
Superior ferrosilicon is produced using high-purity raw materials:
- Quartz (silica) with SiO₂ ≥ 97%
- Coke with fixed carbon ≥ 85%
Buyers may inspect whether the manufacturer has raw material pretreatment processes and whether production is certified under quality systems such as ISO 9001.
