What Is Ferro Silicon?

Definition of Ferro Silicon

Ferro silicon is an iron alloy primarily composed of silicon (Si) and iron (Fe), containing trace impurities such as carbon (C), phosphorus (P), and sulfur (S). It serves as a versatile functional iron alloy in the steel industry, foundry sector, and new energy fields. Its core value lies in leveraging silicon's strong reducing properties and high resistivity to achieve deoxidation, inoculation, and alloying objectives.

Silicon exhibits highly reactive chemical properties, acting as a potent reducing agent. Its stability within alloys minimizes burn-off rates when added to molten steel or iron, enabling efficient silicon transfer. The presence of iron reduces silicon's brittleness, facilitating easy crushing, transportation, and precise dosing. This makes ferro-silicon the core low-cost form for industrial silicon utilization.

Core Production Process of Ferrosilicon

  • Raw Material Preparation: Crush silica stone (SiO₂ content ≥97%) to 50-100mm, blend proportionally with iron ore (Fe content ≥90%) and coke (fixed carbon ≥85%, serving as reducing agent).
  • High-Temperature Smelting: The mixed raw materials are fed into an electric arc furnace. Heating via the arc generated by electrodes triggers the core reaction: quartz is reduced to silicon by carbon, which then combines with iron to form ferrosilicon.
  • Iron Tapping and Refining: Upon completion of smelting, molten ferrosilicon is tapped from the furnace bottom. After cooling, it is crushed into lumps or granulated as required. Surface impurities are removed to yield finished ferrosilicon.

Four Core Applications of Ferro Silicon

Steel Smelting

Residual oxygen in molten steel reduces its toughness and causes defects like gas holes and inclusions. Silicon in ferro silicon acts as a strong deoxidizer, reacting preferentially with oxygen in molten steel to form silicon dioxide. This silicon dioxide combines with calcium oxide in the steel to create calcium silicate slag, which floats to the surface and separates during molten steel settling.

Foundry Industry

Ferro-silicon serves as an indispensable inoculant in cast iron production. During solidification, direct cooling of molten iron can cause white cast iron, rendering castings unworkable. Adding ferro-silicon promotes the formation of fine, uniform flake or spheroidal graphite, preventing white cast iron. It also supplements silicon content, enhancing the cast iron's strength, hardness, and wear resistance.

Ferroalloy Production

Ferrosilicon serves as an efficient reducing agent in the smelting of other ferroalloys such as medium- and low-carbon ferromanganese, metallic manganese, and ferrochrome. For instance, producing medium- and low-carbon ferromanganese cannot be achieved directly with carbon reduction. Instead, silicon from ferrosilicon is used to reduce manganese ore. Silicon's strong reducing power without introducing carbon enables the production of high-quality, low-carbon, low-phosphorus ferromanganese that meets the demands of premium steel grades.

Non-Steel Applications

High-purity ferrosilicon serves as raw material for silicon-based anodes. After purification and modification, it enhances lithium battery energy density. Ultra-high-purity ferrosilicon (silicon content ≥99.9%) undergoes chemical purification to produce polysilicon. Adding small amounts of ferrosilicon to welding rod coatings prevents weld oxidation and improves mechanical properties.

Despite the high energy consumption involved in ferrosilicon production, its irreplaceable role in industrial applications makes it an indispensable basic material in both the steel industry chain and the new energy industry chain.
