What Is the Difference Between 72 Ferrosilicon and 75 Ferrosilicon?

Different ingredients

Ferrosilicon 72 is an alloy with iron and silicon as the main components, of which the silicon content is about 72%, and the rest is iron and a small amount of impurities such as aluminum, calcium, carbon, etc.

Ferrosilicon 75 has a higher silicon content, usually 75%-80%, and a correspondingly lower iron content. The impurity content is similar to that of Ferrosilicon 72, but the control of some indicators (such as aluminum and calcium) may be more stringent.

Comparison Dimensions Ferrosilicon 72 Ferrosilicon 75
Silicon Content 72%~75% 75%~80%
Iron Content 25%~28% 20%~25%
Impurity Content Relatively high levels of impurities such as aluminum, calcium, and carbon Lower levels of certain impurities (such as aluminum and calcium), resulting in higher purity
Density Approximately 3.5–3.8 g/cm³ (lower silicon content, slightly higher density) Approximately 3.2–3.5 g/cm³ (higher silicon content results in slightly lower density)
Melting Point Relatively low melting point (low silicon content, high iron content) Relatively high melting point (higher silicon content; iron melts at 1538°C, silicon at 1414°C, with the alloy's melting point falling between the two)
Electrical Conductivity High iron content, electrical and thermal conductivity closer to that of iron Higher silicon content results in slightly lower conductivity compared to silicon iron 72 (silicon has weaker conductivity than iron)
Chemical Reactivity Lower silicon content, slightly weaker reactivity with oxygen, acids, etc. High silicon content results in more vigorous reactions with elements such as oxygen and ammonia at high temperatures.

Different applications

Main Applications of Ferro Silicon 72

Deoxidizer:

In steelmaking, Ferro Silicon 72 is used as a deoxidizer to remove oxygen from molten steel, forming silicon dioxide which floats to the surface as slag.

With moderate silicon content and relatively low cost, it is widely used in the production of ordinary carbon steel and low-alloy steel.

Inoculant:

Added to cast iron to improve graphite morphology, refine grains, and enhance the strength and toughness of cast iron.

Alloy Additive:

Ferro Silicon 72 can be used to produce silicon-iron-aluminum alloy, silicon-iron-magnesium alloy, and others, enhancing the wear resistance and corrosion resistance of alloys, which are widely applied in the casting industry.

Main Applications of Ferro Silicon 75

High-End Steelmaking and Special Alloys:

With higher silicon content and lower impurity levels, Ferro Silicon 75 is more suitable for deoxidation and alloying in the production of high-quality steel, stainless steel, and heat-resistant steel, such as in silicon steel sheet manufacturing.

It also serves as a primary silicon source in special alloys (e.g., silicon-chromium alloy, silicon-manganese alloy) to enhance alloy performance.

Chemical and Electronics Industry:

High-purity Ferro Silicon 75 can be used as a raw material for producing silicides (such as silane, silica sol) or for manufacturing electronic packaging materials and semiconductor coatings.

Refractories and Welding Materials:

Ferro Silicon 75 is used in the production of high-temperature resistant refractory bricks and welding electrode coatings, utilizing silicon's high melting point and oxidation resistance to improve material performance.
