Core Functions
Ferrosilicon has two main applications in steelmaking.
- Deoxidizer: Excess oxygen in molten steel can cause defects such as porosity and cracks, compromising strength. The silicon in ferrosilicon reacts with oxygen to form silicon dioxide (SiO₂), which is then removed as slag. This process reduces oxygen content in molten steel and enhances steel purity.
- Alloying Agent: Adding ferrosilicon to molten steel improves hardness, strength, elasticity, and corrosion resistance. Different grades of ferrosilicon meet specific alloying requirements for various steels.
Secondary Functions
Beyond steelmaking, ferrosilicon serves purposes in other industrial sectors.
- Nodularizing Agent in Casting: During cast iron production, ferrosilicon promotes graphite spheroidization and refinement, improving mechanical properties, reducing white structure, and enhancing toughness and wear resistance.
- Reducing Agent in Ferroalloy Production: During the manufacture of other ferroalloys like ferrovandium and ferrotitanium, ferrosilicon serves as a reducing agent, converting metal oxides into elemental metals.
- Other Applications: Ferrosilicon is also used in producing silicon steel sheets or as a coating component for welding electrodes, enhancing their welding performance.
