Ferrosilicon is widely used in a variety of fields, including steelmaking, casting, magnesium smelting, and the chemical industry.
Steelmaking Industry
Ferrosilicon is an important deoxidizer in the steelmaking industry, used for both precipitation and diffusion deoxidation, effectively removing oxygen from molten steel. It can also be used as an alloying element in low-alloy structural steel, spring steel, bearing steel, heat-resistant steel, and electrical silicon steel. It significantly improves the strength, hardness, and elasticity of steel. Furthermore, ferrosilicon powder releases a significant amount of heat when burned at high temperatures and is often used as a heating agent in steel ingot caps to improve ingot quality and recovery.
Cast Iron Industry
Adding a certain amount of ferrosilicon to cast iron can prevent the formation of carbides and promote graphite precipitation and spheroidization. Therefore, in ductile iron production, ferrosilicon is an important inoculant and spheroidizing agent, improving the properties and quality of the cast iron.
Ferroalloy Production
High-silicon ferrosilicon has a very low carbon content and is a common reducing agent in the ferroalloy industry for the production of low-carbon ferroalloys.
Magnesium Metal Smelting
During the Pidgeon process, 75% ferrosilicon is commonly used in the high-temperature smelting of magnesium metal. This replaces the magnesium in the CaO/MgO, and approximately 1.2 tons of ferrosilicon are consumed for every ton of magnesium produced.
Other Industries
Ground or atomized ferrosilicon powder can be used as a suspension phase in the mineral processing industry and as a coating for welding rods in the welding rod manufacturing industry.
