Composition and Raw Materials

 

  • Ferrosilicon (FeSi): Produced from iron ore, silica, and coke, without manganese. Common grades include 75%, 72%, and 65% silicon content.
  • Silicomanganese (SiMn): Requires the addition of manganese ore. Manganese content is a key index, with typical grades containing Mn 65–70% and Si 14–20%.

 

Role in Steelmaking

 

  • Ferrosilicon: Primarily serves as a deoxidizer, removing oxygen from molten steel and refining the grain structure, but does not add manganese to steel.
  • Silicomanganese: Functions as both a deoxidizer and alloying agent, simultaneously removing oxygen and introducing manganese, which improves steel's strength, hardness, and wear resistance.

 

Price and Market Influences

 

  • Ferrosilicon: Prices are mainly affected by the cost of silica, coke, and demand from the steel industry for deoxidation.
  • Silicomanganese: In addition to the influence of silicon and coke costs, manganese ore imports and prices are the key factors driving fluctuations.

 

Main Applications

 

Ferrosilicon:

As a deoxidizer: Removes oxygen from molten steel to improve purity.

As an alloying agent: Enhances steel's strength, hardness, and elasticity.

In casting: Used as an inoculant to improve graphite morphology and enhance cast iron performance.

Silicomanganese:

Mainly used as a composite deoxidizer and alloying agent.

Manganese increases steel's strength, toughness, and wear resistance while counteracting the harmful effects of sulfur. Mn combines with S to form MnS, reducing hot brittleness.

In steelmaking, SiMn often replaces part of ferrosilicon and metallic manganese, providing good effect at lower cost.
